I thank everyone for their posting and comments. I'll see how he does for the next couple weeks with this slow and steady spend a little more time each time routine. If there's no improvements at all I will get a trainer to work with us. In that case I'll be asking you all for training recommendations! Someone who can get on and ride him and stay on even if he busts his moves, as well as help me become the kind of rider that can support him and direct him to not go down that road. I'm a pretty good rider at this point, but I probably need some coaching on how to block his moves and/or get him going back straight after he gets a little off, without antagonizing him into escalation mode. Would like to get it smoothed out before winter, in any case, when arena riding night the only option some weeks.
I agree that as long as he shows this behavior it could come out on the trail or another more high risk situation, so I'm not going to just skate around it forever.
