there is a large network of trails that are well traveled on weekends, strange that they were not seen. They could be going through trees/brush off trail, and unfortunately there are unexpected drop offs, granite, etc. Two ideas - search dogs (not sure if there are any trained to tell the difference between horse's smell).
Second, didn't someone post last year about finding a lost horse by leaving one tied and riding other horses away, so it would call for them? With a big area like this, a recording could be used, or the search could be done in stages - every mile or so, ride ahead and leave one horse behind with it's rider, untill it calls for it's friends. Then listen for an answer. If none, repeat.
