With my two arabian geldings we refer to the tail straight up in the air as their "idiot meters" - when they are really hot or have an adrenalin rush, their tails go up and there is usually snorting or other silliness. At 1/2 way, they are fun to ride, have some extra energy.
Sounds like your mare was feeling good - as long as she has a good mind, enjoy the ride!
