It's time when you decide it's time. A horse is not designed to grow old gracefully and die in its sleep. Those are rare (and wonderful!) and I've never had one that went that way. You can make a decision based on what you know of your horse and what quality of life you know keeps your horse going. As one old timer vet once told me, "Let 'em leave the party while they're still having fun." Waiting until the horse is laying on the ground, colicked or badly injured or just unable to stand on their own without help is probably not what you want for your horse, and to the horse there will always be that sense of self-preservation that keeps them going long past the time all joy in life has left them. I knew one mare who was so miserable all the time from a tumor, until her owner showed up at the barn. She always perked up and seemed so happy to see her, that her owner thought she wasn't suffering and could still have good quality of life for a while. But what she didn't see was that when she left, that horse looked as sad and miserable and suffering as any starved or neglected animal. Her owner always took such good care of her that no wonder the horse seemed happy when she was around. But it's what the owner didn't see that broke my heart.
That little mare showed me that it's time whenever you decide it's time. Once you make the decision, you know it's time.
