At least one or two piles + the number of horses

I used to feed at least 1 or 2 piles more than the total # of horses. They will rotate around, but the pigs can't eat out of more than one pile at a time, despite how hard they try
so the low-end horses can still get some. If you have oldsters with limited or ground down teeth, you may have to separate them at one point in the day to supplement their diet with wet pellets or beet pulp to keep their weight on.
