If it matters

I chose to retire my horse permanently at 16 when he got Cushing's. The reason is my nephew had Cushing's as a child, and he was able to vocalize what I knew my horse could not about what it was doing to him. It told me that what my horse was feeling inside was so terrible that riding him was going to be more stress than he could handle. So, I retired him. After he stabilized on pergolide, I was tempted to "unretire" him, at least just for little walks on the trail, but I could only see the outward effects and guess the inside of how he felt based on what I knew of the horse. I figured I'd just let him stay retired.
