Back in the ancient days of 2001 when my old guy (now passed) was first diagnosed, my vet had us start with a low dose (compounded and syringed by mouth) then had us increase gradually. I believe we did start with .25mg actually. Never had any problems with that and gradual increase by .25mg increments.
Interestingly, my dad was on PerMax (pergolide) for Parkinsons at the same time (although a higher dosage), and he had hallucinations and aggression. I seem to recall that those were some of the side effects known for humans..
Not sure what the thoughts are these days. Going for a 1mg dose to start might be a little hard on some horses?
