The more you can keep air flowing into the wound, the less likely an infection will occur. The farrier can often get a good seal, but there's still more chance of infection in a closed environment. I would stick to the Soft Ride boots.
I'm glad she didn't get a deep wound from it. I've been through street nail surgery. Not fun. Seven months recovery from that with a special shoe plate to allow treatment while still providing protection.
