I have had two horses that responded negatively to prevacox at my barn. One was on it for about 2 years for arthritis. He developed swelling in chest which vets said was but bites. It would come and go at first but then only stayed and horse got lethargic. Laying down all the time. Blood tests were taken and he was diagnosed with cancer. Owner made arrangements to put him down but first I had been talking with her about taking him off the previcox and so she did. Long story short he did not have cancer but was having reaction to long term use of the drug. He is now fantastic, like a new horse and owner realize previcox never made a different in how he moved anyway. 2nd horse presented same way and totally depressed after 1 year of previcox, vet diagnosed with cushings. She started on prascend but took off the previcox and tested him every month for his sugar levels. In spring tests revealed he had no reason to be on prascend and she took him off. Now its a year later and his levels rose again. But its possible previcox was not helping his body deal with the other issues it was having and would of sent him down the cushing road sooner. If you all recall they used to say Bute had no side effects either, that was a big fat lie! ALL DRUGS have side effects.
