Growing up in Europe, I know for a fact that they do WAY MORE when it comes to improving the environment. In Germany you got charged for plastic bags in supermarkets already in the early 1990's. They had recycle bins way before recycling was even a known word here. Nowadays they are still ahead, because they work more on avoiding garbage in the first place, since even recycling uses a lot of energy and still creates leftover waste.
Yes, there are for sure countries that produce more waste, but fact is the US is continually one of the countries to push for less strict guidelines at the UN conferences when it comes to environmental issues, although the media here sells you quite a different story...
