Do you know that game some of us older folks played when we were kids called "Operation?" You had to pull bits of plastic out of a cartoon drawing of a dude with tweezers and you couldn't touch the sides or it would buzz and you'd lose your turn. The winner was the one who got the most pieces out without buzzing. You're trying to set that up for him. You're pointing him on a line you want him to follow, and if he steps off the line, you "buzz" him, by asking him immediately to head back toward the line again. When he's on the line, you try to leave him alone, but the first foot that steps off the line, you point him back toward the line with your reins, then leave him alone again. He'll start hunting up that line until he stays right on it. When you can do that at home, you can do that on a switchback out on the trail, too.
