Straight alfalfa diets are difficult to balance since alfalfa is so high in calcium. Technically, yes - you can balance that high calcium by adding enough phosphorus and magnesium, but getting them to eat that much phosphorus and magnesium is another story. It's a little like trying to feed a healthy, balanced diet to children who only want to eat ice cream. Feed them the hay that best supplies the nutrients and calories they need. You'll be money ahead in the long run.
