I can only tell you my experience. My old mare came to me with four shoes on and some hocks that were arthritic. I pulled the shoes and she got better, but I also had acupuncture done as well as got them injected when she got too much "bone on bone" contact. After I retired her, she eventually got very wobbly in those hocks, but she also had some tendon issues and I had to put special shoes on her at that time. However, all the years I was riding her and had students riding her, she was quite comfortable without shoes.
