This same gelding was declared cushings about 10 years ago and put on Pergolide. He was on it for almost 2 years, slowly wasting away. He looked like he was dying before we finally tried taking him off it; couldn't get him to eat anything. He's never had an apparent cushings-related problem since (til this abscess!). But by then we had learned a lot more about nutrition and fine-tuned everyone's. Pergolide was pulled from the human market for the same reason - deathly anorexia.
Also wanted to mention that this gelding taught me that GMO alfalfa is bad news. I was mixing alfalfa/timothy cubes with straight timothy pellets (he has no opposing teeth - too much power dentistry in his younger years). He was trying to avoid the cubes, and losing weight. Then I found out my supplier had switched to GMO alfalfa. Got him on Modesto Milling organic alfalfa - his topline came up, ribs and hips filled out all the way. Like we haven't seen in over 10 years! The organic isn't that much more expensive. Definitely worth it.
