I had an old horse with low ringbone caused from a fractured coffin bone. I also gave him 1/2 tablet Previcox once a day. Sometimes a whole tablet. I do think pain affects appetite. But for my old man, hay wasn't important for him so I gave him Mountain Sunrise organic Timothy pellets. I really think that's what kept him going. He loved them. You can get straight Timothy pellets, or different combinations such as alfalfa Timothy, oat pellets, or straight alfalfa. It kept weight on him until I ultimately had to release his body from another injury. He also got 1/2 flake twice a day of orchard grass to munch on and a little oat hay just because. I also gave him a supplement from Smart Pak for arthritis that I think worked well. Good luck, it's a lot to keep these old ones going.
