The first year UP on my mountain, my Morgan/Welsh did not grow enough coat, so I blanketed her as necessary. Her second winter she grew a coat any bear would envy. The herd all grow thick as they need to. They do have access to shelters, windbreaks, trees, etc. they make their own decisions where to hang out. If it's going to be particularly cold and/or wet, I feed extra alfalfa. All healthy, all happy.
If for any reason I find a blanket necessary, I will put one on. Just like shoes, all barefoot, but would use whatever is needed if needed.
Illegetimi non carborundum.
