I own a large boarding facility and house about 50 horses. In 30 years there has only been one time where multiple horses got a cough. There were a few that went to a show and they brought it home and many horses got it. It did not require vet care, none of them went off their feed or were acting sick in any way. There were a few that would cough after trotting for months and finally it went away. There was no nasal discharge at all just a cough. So no its not common at all and vital signs should be checked and other signs of something more serious, but not all things are reason to panic.
