They place sensors between the ears and on top of their rump and then on the feet. They then have the animal trot off and the machine will return graphs from the data. We were able to detect very early stages of navicular that wasn't always obvious in looking at my mare move. We then followed up with X-Rays to confirm the information. It doesn't matter if the animal is gaited or not it is gathering information specific to the animal. As for pre-purchase that is your call and your comfort zone. You can always make the call at the time of the appointment if the vet see something
