[edited to add]...and your relationship with him/her. i board near pagemill pastures and my horse is in one of the smaller pastures at my barn (4 acres). sometimes i call her and she comes, sometimes i have to walk out and say hi to her before she'll follow me in. i used to have a horse at another barn, another small pasture situation, and that horse (at least in the beginning of our relationship, before we bonded) would take an hour to "catch" sometimes. once we formed a relationship, he would come up to me and follow me in without ropes, but it took a lot of work, and a lot of listening to him. the answers to your question depend solely on your relationship with your horse.
