At this time of the year, horses don't rush in to greet their owners because of the grass (well, mine waits until I'm about 10 feet away ). In the summer/fall/winter the horses are very easy to find and catch because they stick around the area where they feed for hours.
In the spring, yes, it becomes a major pain to find your horse sometimes, especially if you come out late. More difficult for mare owners than geldings because the mare's pasture is hillier (and thus more up and down to find your horse). But, I consider it a small price for my horse's happiness out in pasture.
