As someone said before it depends on the horse, how well he is drinking, sweating, temperature - many different factors. I have one guy who hardly needs any and another who needs plenty - and both horses are on a similar diet and exercise program.
My general rule of thumb (got that from Val K. for what it is worth) is 1 dose every 2 hrs or 15 miles whatever comes first... I tried to give less at times, but that didn't work for one of my guys. I usually give a dose in the morning before the start and than wait until they started drinking and than start above protocol. But again, it is very important to test this before on training rides and you have plenty of time left to do so :-)
As for the brand - again, depends probably on the horse. I use Enduramax, haven't tried Enduramax plus yet, but I like the concept and will switch as soon as I depleted my current stock. I don't like e-lytes with sugars and carbs... you shouldn't need to supplement those on a 50 miler anyway....
