And even with having a kid try out the horse/pony before purchase, I have seen cases where the personality of the horse/pony changes a lot in a new environment. I know when I loaned a pony to a friend once, she became quite frisky/energized. She lives in pasture at my place and a kid trying to get her to trot takes a lot of work at my place. But I saw for myself when I would go to trim her in Castro Valley that she was zooming and so full of energy. But she was living in a little corral there. I had never realized how much energy they burn in pasture. She was half asleep at my place, but there she was raring to go and was quite a handful except for experienced riders. I feel safe setting a baby on her at my place. But shoot - there she was the energizer bunny. So environmental and feed changes, etc can have an unknown effect when a horse changes locations, etc.
