It could definitely be an abscess, especially if horse came up 3 legged lame

all of a sudden....if the abscess is deep in the foot then the horse may not necessarily be responsive to hoof testers. I would soak the horses foot for 20 mins a day with epsom salt in hot water (and maybe throw in a little cider vinegar for kicks), but make sure it isn't thrush before you start soaking the foot, don't want to make the thrush worse. The soaking will help soften the foot and bring the abscess out and to a head and assist the icthamnol in drawing it out. If you hate itchthamnol, you can also use an epsom salt paste it just isn't as effective (it is green, I've seen farriers use it in the place of icthamnol) and it is more expensive. If you put icthamnol on the hoof, and wrap in baby diapers as others have suggested (it keeps the icthamnol on the foot and cushions the feet) then just wrap those with heavy duty duct tape (I suggest gorilla tape)
