If you use sheet metal you have to be really careful that all sharp edges are bent under. Without hotwire horses will still rub on sheet metal and I've seen some badly cut noses as a result. I've never seen a horse get shy of an enclosure due to hotwire. I've put cribbers out in a pasture with other horses and hotwire and the cribbing has stopped entirely, but resumes once they are back in a pen.
