without a doubt there needs to be a more sensible plan for BLM & the Mustangs. a large part of the problem is the lack of common sense on all sides. no animal can breed forever without limit and not destroy it's habitat. the BLM/Government and the public need to get real!
everything out there shouldn't be breeding. and adopters shouldn't be breeding. castration, castration, castration for starters. stop badly conformed mares from breeding. there are a few proven Spanish herds that people want and will pay good money for, manage them effectively to increase revenues. there are so many things that can be done to ease this burden and make life better for the horses. but right now it's being treated as a horse 'puppy mill' where quality has nothing to do with decisions and far, far too many horses are breeding as less and less homes, really good homes, are available.
start by removing and gelding males for adoption. once that is under control start adopting the less breeding worthy mares. that will leave far better horses to perpetuate the 'Mustang Mystique' and remove the grazing, management pressures.
