I agree that there may be something about fresh forage that would be beneficial to him. Although I don't know whether fresh forage provided in a small rectangle has the same benefit as fresh forage in pasture where there is a movement component. Certainly there is typically advantage to fresh forage over grain for a lot of horses although they still need minerals. Don't forget that you need to feed at least 5lbs of the gold to meet his mineral needs and personally when you have nutrients coming from a variety of sources I think it is beneficial to analyze the diet to insure nothing is missing or over supplemented.
My sense though for your horse though is that until you reduce the stress surrounding meal times that nothing you do will be as beneficial as it could be.
