14" English Saddle - is this kids size? Posted by WindmillHills Cheryl on 5/29/2008, 3:36 pm 75.2.198.30 Is a 14" english saddle considered a kid's saddle? If so - any guess on age range of kids that would use this size saddle. Do they make smaller english saddles for little kids (say 5-7 years old?). All my kid and pony stuff is western, and Country Supply has a cute cheap full package english deal. Since last year all the lead line classes in my area were english instead of western, we didn't take any kids to them. But it would be nice to have the flexibility to do lead line classes with the kids in english only shows. Currently I use 12" and 14" western saddles for the kids. So hoping a 14" english might be the equivalent for the little ones.  Post a Response

I wouldn't buy an english saddle for children less than a 15" because they outgrow them so quickly. Since the children at that age aren't jumping, the difference is not significant and you have many more options of higher quality saddles in a 15". Check out ebay for Collegiate Ian Millars, you can get them for under $500 sometimes and they are gorgeous kid's saddles. Much better than anything from Country Supply which will be like cardboard. For example, STubben Rex is a kids saddle that comes in 15 and 16". Since kids grow so fast, when my daughter was kid saddle age, I got her the 16" so I wouldn't have to change the size.  Post a Response

English saddles are measured from the front screw/rivet on the side of the pommel to the center edge of the cantle. A tip to find out if the saddle fits the human is to have a full hands width behind the persons butt to the end of the seat of the saddle when seated in the saddle. Too many people ride in English saddles that are too small for them. The average adult sized saddle is 18" to 20".  Post a Response
