Goopy Eyes Posted by HaffieCheryl on 7/12/2008, 9:28 pm 71.139.174.92 My mare had one goopy eye. I wasn't too worried about it until today, when I saw the other eye is effected. Both eyes are weeping yellowish gunk, puffy and red in the corners. I rinsed with water and washed around her eyes and face with EE. I'm praying it's nothing contagious. Any suggestions? If not better by Monday, I'll call the vet.  Post a Response

My newest equine has the same thing, and is on the same meds from Loomis. I know my eyes burn like fire the last week too. So far, none of the other horses have it and my vet said it's irritation related.  Post a Response

You can either have the vet out to flush them or you can try hot packs to try to loosen the gunk up. I've had him for 16 years and never bothered with a fly mask in pasture. Both eyes got really goopy and even swollen last year before I masked him, and they improved a lot after I masked him but still weeped a bit. This year he did fine for a while and then they got all goopy and swollen again. I bought a cashel crusader and they have been great (no goop at all) ever since - even with the smoke. The cashel fits his head better than the other masks I've used, so they flys can't crawl underneath it, and it seems to give him more room to "blink".  Post a Response

We use it on one of our horses who has these symptoms. Don't have to do his daily, but just as needed. Our other boy's eyes aren't affected.  Post a Response

I'll flush them out again today, try the hot packs and put her fly mask back on. None of the other 5 horses are having issues. This poor horse has enough to deal with in recovering from a extensor tendon. I have seen the vet more since March than in 25 years of owning horses. I will have to call the vet if it's not cleared up by Tuesday.  Post a Response

Fly Masks! Posted by Marcia RDH on 7/13/2008, 3:37 pm, in reply to "Goopy Eyes" 71.116.85.186 When my horses get them if I put the fly masks on they clear up in about 24 hours, providing their little "friends" don't pull them off. I have a grey, with blue eyes, he has dark pigment around them but I think the sun bothers him also. The masks also help with sunburn and dust.  Post a Response

Summertime/fly/dust/smoke Posted by MissDoc on 7/14/2008, 10:02 am, in reply to "Goopy Eyes" 66.123.85.123 Mine get it but not yellowy - that would make me concerned if it didn't resolve itself quickly. But mine do get goopy eyes during the summer. Make sure your fly masks (if you use them and if you don't I'd start) are clean with no debris - dirt build up, etc. Use the roll on fly deterrent around their eyes - too keep the flies from making it worse. I use a warm wet washcloth to clean them (Use one end of the cloth for one eye and the other for the second eye - just in case or use two different ones). Terramiacin can help clear it up too. Acupuncture... Posted by sts on 7/14/2008, 11:57 am, in reply to "Goopy Eyes" 71.141.113.126 I wouldn't have believed that it would work for the runny eye summer syndrom...my horse has had chronic problems with sensitivity to dust and flies. A fly mask helps, but he still had runny eyes. A few months ago he was getting acupuncture done for something else and I just mentioned the runny eye thing to the vet. She said she could do something about that, needled all around his eyes and voila, his eyes have not been weeping at all, even with the smoke and dust. Sounds crazy, but it totally worked!
