Fly sheets and feeding garlic Posted by joy4jumps on 6/29/2009, 1:29 pm 64.160.115.139 Can you use fly sheets in the summer or does it get too hot for the horses? Also, does anyone feed garlic to repel bugs? Does it work? How much do you feed?  Post a Response

He has a Kensington fly sheet, with the UV protectant. I have skipped a day here and there when it was really, really, really hot (100+), but it was really just for my own mind - he was perfectly happy with it on. There are a bunch of people at my barn that feed garlic to repel bugs (ticks, etc). They say it works fine. However, I have heard people say they start feeling "hungry" when they are around those horses...as the horses literally smell like garlic!  Post a Response

Last summer there was a horse that had a fly sheet on that was overheating (no sweat, just respiration over 60, looking very sleepy and droopy, etc). The owner gave me permission to remove it and the horse instantly seemed to improve. I am sure the fly sheet was holding too much heat. So I personally don't think fly sheets should stay on in super hot weather (high 90's and above) unless there are strong winds to cool the horse. Garlic seems to work for some horses and not others. I have had success with garlic but would not recommend using it year round. Use it during the worst part of fly season, then discontinue it. There are also some special blends out there (like from www.Chevalinternational.com, etc) that are specifically formulated to help keep the flys and ticks away. They have additional ingredients like apple cider vinegar, brewers yeast, etc that also help keep the pests away. If it gets hot enough, they will sweat. I feed garlic. On some horses it works to reduce the fly bites; on others not so much. If you're worried about overheating, then try the soft mesh sheets and not the vinyl-like ones. As long you're able to check your horse every day and see whether the sheet is making him overheat or not. I would love to be able to use a sheet on my mare but she's out on a very large section of land and I don't see her every day. And the babies out in the same field have already learned that fly masks are fun to take off so I can imagine what they would do to a fly sheet. My friend feeds her horses garlic, works for the two horses they have. I've heard it works on some and other times it doesn't affect the bugs at all. Got Thoroughbred?  Post a Response

I've been feeding garlic, not much help. has a fly zapper in his stall. should I switch to mesh sheet b/c I hate to remove it....on hot days he rather stand in his stall. to me its warmer inside but out of the sun. I've tried so many different fly sprays, wipes, etc. my friend swears by Wipe but yuck messy!  Post a Response

My poor mare is absolutely swamped in flies. I've probably dumped about a gallon of fly spray on her in two days and she's still covered in them. Went on a trail ride with my dad and his horse didn't have any spray on at all and not one fly. My mare was drenched in spray and yet she had a whole flock of flies all over. They're really bad this year. Also, the mesh sheets are usually of a finer weave and prevent smaller things such as mosquitoes and gnats from landing. Got Thoroughbred?  Post a Response

I had the same problem last summer with Larry's flyspray their new formula attracts flies. The person I rode with said the same thing get away from me the flies are all around your horse and none on mine and they did not use fly spray. Since I found out that Espree bought the original larry's flyspray formula I now use that and no more problems. But when I use up the last of my new Larrys I have flies bombarding me. "Bug Off Garlic" was a miracle for a friends' mare Posted by Fancy That on 6/30/2009, 3:11 pm, in reply to "Fly sheets and feeding garlic" 66.129.225.151 My friend bought a mare that was SEVERLY ALLERGIC to flies and no-see-ums. She would have to be seen by the vet every year and prescribed medications. I told my friend to try Bug Off Garlic and it worked a miracle. The mare was never bothered by bugs again. Nor more HIVES, not more open wounds/sores, and in general...she didn't even get ticks and flies didn't like to land on her! All the other horses in pasture would have ticks and she wouldn't. So yes - GARLIC WORKS FOR BUG REPELLENT NATURALLY Good luck  Post a Response
