Rascal kid hit my horse with a base ball bat Posted by Nenna on 6/29/2009, 10:03 pm 71.146.16.145 To those of you who ride in Half Moon Bay. I rode along the trail above the beach just south of Kelly, where there is a camping place just last Friday. I passed a kid, 9-11 yo, studs in both ears, dark hair, with an orange-black, plastic base ball bat. Right after I passed, the kid ran up behind my horse and hit him along the hocks. Fortunately for the kid, I was too busy staying on as my horse lunged forward and wanted to be out of there. Can you believe it? Anyway, I'd thought I'd let you know in case you ride around there. Was upset for a long time after it happened.  Post a Response

That will help in case it happens to anyone else. I would be very upset too. Ironically, if your horse had kicked this punk, they would probably sue you. I would encourage you to file a report. Wish I would have thought on my feet a little bit more after it happened and at least ridden after him and have a good talk and intimidating him with a 1000 lb presence (even if my sweet horse is so nice never to kick and bite, the rascal kid wouldn't have known). At least I had some good laughs as my more reactive trail riding buddy entertained me with spicy, colorful language of what we really should have done with that kid. We had to file an incidence report recently. We called it in to the sheriff's office. They sent an officer out to take our report. He would not take what we had written, but it helped us make sure we covered everything. BTW, I asked the officer about recording conversations (to which you are a party) as our problem involved an abusive relative threatening my husband. The sheriff would not give us any opinion on that, but he did tell us that he was recording OUR conversation and showed us the hidden recorder. So, just have as much prepared as you can prior to them taking the report. You can then request a copy of the report after it is typed up. Good luck. Don't let this go. Someone could have gotten hurt horribly. I hope this punk gets caught. kathy  Post a Response

By that I mean, a lot of kids will do something mean to an animal - once. But if they are caught and taught not to do that, they will be okay. But if allowed to continue, the are seriously at risk for growing up to be pretty bad.  Post a Response

(Yes I got your email, kids not both in camp at those times.) Were you riding with anyone else? Dang I would have freaked out!!! Grrrrr... but, crap happens that is part of the game. Ugh though, that is bad crap. Shame your horse isn't a kicker... bring me out there and let Mr. Junior-Punk try that on the Tick, snork she'll give him a horseshoe-shaped forehead tattoo. How much trouble would I get in if I spanked someones kid? In reality, I would do as Neena and be too busy just staying on my horse. Getting off and spanking the kid would probably just get you thrown into jail. But letting him have a piece of your mind is entirely in order. And scaring him a bit wouldn't hurt either. An alternative to anger would be, once your horse has calmed down, to go back after him and cooly demand his name, address and phone number and inform him that his parents or guardians will be hearing from the police... I wont side with those who think its ok to want a horse to level a kick at a kid ( even a dumb punk ass one ) and someone suggested that IF your horse had retalieated, you could have been sued. They are correct. Please file a report ASAP. I might even print up a few flyers and offer a small reward for information, put it where the incident happend. At the very least, I'd have stopped in at the campground after putting the horse up and found the parents and explained the liability/ hospital bills they're lucky they didn't get because of what they're adoring little boy did. And also let them know he's lucky the horse didn't kick out when he did that as he could have been seriously hurt as well. Sometimes that's all it takes. No, I am not smarter than a 5th grader, but occasionally I am smarter than a 1st grader.  Post a Response

You never know what might have happened had you tried to deal with the situation or the "parents". It might have been good or could have been not so good. Some parents are worse than their kids. Anyway, glad you made the report. Too bad you didn't have a camera. We had a punk underage (no license) kid drive his car onto our property and start tearing things up. He got the car stuck. I walked out and took a photo of him and his GF (they were shocked) so when the police got there, I could show them. The kid's dad had showed up and they split before the cops got here, but I had a nice large photo of the kids and the car to hand to the officer.  Post a Response
