LOL I have a yak and no place to ride in nasty weather, so no blankets needed. However, if I was in need of one, I'd get the lightest possible rain sheet, and, if necessary, lower layers for extreme cold. Overheating from overblanketing worries me more than horsey shivering. My retiree only gets a rain sheet for the worst of the winter weather (usually mid dec - feb). He has a heavy coat. My mare is in full work and clipped. Right now she has on a rain sheet, I'll move her up to a mid-weight rain sheet for the worst of the winter. Never more than that.  Post a Response

rain proof sheets with the mesh underneath Posted by kimberly1 on 10/12/2009, 10:20 am, in reply to "Weight of blankets...?" 65.243.188.55 keep off the mud, keep the toveros sort of clean. protect from the driving rains in the mountains. horses don't always use the shelter in the rain, then they would get chills. just made my life easier. never had an issue. the ones with the mesh breath better, the regular straight sheets were like putting plastic on the horses. not good.  Post a Response

I sometimes put a cotton sheet underneath which can be washed during the winter. We use a lightweight one, that is good up to 60degrees and down to the 20's, that is breathable, but waterproof. Keeps em clean to ride, and comfortable, but not too hot, and if it is cold in the AM, I can leave them on in the 50degree daytime weather.  Post a Response

Posted by eqqusowner on 10/12/2009, 11:36 am, in reply to "Weight of blankets...?" 4.20.178.68 Depending on the time of the year and how much rain we get usually a rain sheet is sufficient unless you have a high maintenance horse that has thin skin or hard to keep weight on. I see so many "poor" horses at my pasture that get stuck with well intention blankets on after storms and it gets back up into the 50-60's during the day and the horse roasts in their blanket. I would opt for no-fill rain sheet jmho unless your horse is body clipped or it doesn't get over 55 degrees or is just pouring for more than a day then I find even my best rain sheets get soaked and I have to switch out blankets  Post a Response

Our horses have heavy stormy blankets (say rambo and like blankets), a rain sheet only (no liner just a rain sheet, baker sheets or cotton sheets and some have mid weights as well. Tonight all our clipped horses in woodside are getting rambo types. Unclipped horses in barn rain sheets no weight or liner as ther are not used to weather and we are to have up to 50 mph wind. Our stalls are inclosed on three sides but open on the paddock end so it can be breezy. Our rain sheets have the mesh on inside. Show me your horse and I will tell you who you are. OUt here, we don't really need the heavy weight, and even some medium weights are overkill. I like to blanket mostly so they don't get soaked to the skin when it's freezing cold.
