West Nile vaccination Posted by dixies chick on 10/19/2009, 3:19 pm 146.23.4.23 Acc to our vet, the WNV vaccination is effective for a year and only needed annually in the Spring vs. bi-annually now. He said continuing to vaccinate 2x/year won't do any harm and he would do if an owner still wants it. So, we're debating: $35 shot to be sure vs $$$ for treatment assuming horse survives the virus. We're in the East Bay and mosquito activity is less during winter. Horses have been on the 2x/year schedule so it's not as if they haven't been fully vaccinated. There hasn't been an outbreak in our area. Would you vaccinate again now?  Post a Response

If your vet administered the spring vaccine, then I would assume it is the vaccine that is good for one year and would see no need to vaccinate again until next spring. Depends on which kinds you gave Posted by Martha on 10/19/2009, 5:30 pm, in reply to "West Nile vaccination" 204.68.210.39 The once/year kind is considered sufficient now that the virus has been around for awhile (not a hotbed of actvitiy any more with "naieve" horse and bird flocks). The UC Davis recommendation has been for less, as the virus has become more established in the area. I'd do whatever your vet recommends. We're doing once/year.  Post a Response

The vaccines are good for a year once you get beyond the annual booster. Most vaccines (including flu, rhino etc) are good for a year and only needed annually unless in endemic areas and not twice a year. But it keeps the vets in business. Here is the WNV info for Fort Dodge off the label of the vaccine. DOSE: Inject one 1 mL dose intramuscularly using aseptic technique. Administer a second 1 mL dose 3 to 6 weeks after the first dose. Revaccinate annually with one 1 mL dose. Early revaccination may be advisable when horses are faced with an outbreak or with other conditions which might make heavy exposure likely. AAEP vaccination guidelines have changed. The vet I was using years ago said he'd be fine once a year since he's had it since it first came out and the endemic worries had gone down in this area a few years ago.
