best hoof dressing for cracking hooves.any suggestions that work great.?

I would like some advise on hoof dressing.

I've tried so many and most of them I never even finished using because I saw no results. I use Rain Maker on one of the horses that we have here and his hooves aren't as dry and the cracks are minimal compared to what they were.

I live in VERY dry ground, desert really. In the summers hoofs tend to chip off pretty quickly and look dried out. Rainmaker has helped alot and I now apply it to those few that seem to have issues. My farrier also noticed a difference in 2, last time he trimmed them.

cracking hooves are from unbalanced diet, lack of copper and zinc and too much iron. Also add frequent trimming (4-6 weeks) where the the hoof wall is rolled helps.

External hoof applications will not get rid of cracking hooves. Good strong feet come from inside out, just like your own nail health.

And usually the best topical strengthener is plain water, just a soak (but not standing in wet constantly) also provide a clean, dry living area.

Save bacon grease always when you cook bacon, also have friends, relatives, etc. or lard helps but not as good, keep in can and brush on. Also- I added biotin & gelatin capsules ; HUGE differenc! As adsequest stated-diet is key, but until you get the balance, bacon grease really does help, as well as for wound dressings.

back in the 60s and 70s that's all they used. I used it for many years, but don't like the flys it draws, so use commercial made products if any now. We also used to paint on creosote onto wood fencing and horses never chewed the wood either, but that was found to be toxic and taken off the market, but it sure worked. LOL

use old motor oil....seemed to work fine.
A good ranch horse will side pass to the truck bed and stand quielty while you open the ice chest and grab a beer.

let them stand in water for awhile. He recommended building a sand moat around the water trough and fill it with water; then they stand in the water when drinking.

an unbalanced diet and inadequate fatty acids can contribute to cracking.
