Liening a horse

My trainer is needing to place a lien on a horse. Any input other than Equine Legal Solutions( been there, done that, wont again).

If anyone knows of a free form that'd be awesome!

is it Oregon or California?

in California, you need to get ownership by either having it signed over to you, or going to court and having the court turn over ownership to you....

Hi. Not sure why "been there, done that, won't again" would apply to us here at Equine Legal Solutions, but we do have useful and FREE information on our website about various state equine lien statutes, including OR and CA:

Oregon Agister's Lien Foreclosure

BUT, please keep in mind that it's rarely cost-effective to try and foreclose on an agister's lien. It usually makes more sense to just let the owner take the horse. Here's why

Send the horse back if the owner would return his calls. She has basically been abandoned. He is paying me her board out of his own pocket, is now $1200 in the hole. He thinks if he starts the process she may just send the papers. She doesnt want this filly.

We have done business before, this is Lynn from Redbud Ranch.

My friend with a boarding barn just had a couple of horses abandoned. It is much easier if the owner will just sign the horse over.

Out here abandoned horses are required by state law to go through public livestock auction, it doesn't usually work out well for the horses.

Lynn,

I am posting to let you know Rachel runs one of the top equine law firms in the country. She is very helpful to those in "the know" in the community. I have found her helpful from a small barn perspective but she handles much bigger clients than me, and they all speak HIGHLY of her.
Rachel also has many years of experience as a horse owner and competitor.

I think you may want to think twice before bashing proffesionals in the horse community,as these things get around. Of course it's never smart to bash an attorney.

I hope you and your trainer can work out a positive situation for the horse that has not has her board paid.

It is important that people have the right to express their opinions. AshlandEquestrian said nothing other than she is looking for a referral other than Equine Legal Solutions. It is her personal business decision. If she changes her mind, that's her prerogative too.
