Re: My belief is that it is time for Gail Ivey
Posted by rosalita208 One thing I could do with this guy is change the location of where we are working to see if he just associates that arena with bad or anxious feelings. Maybe he has come to associate me with negative feelings of whatever kind. So I'll also have someone else ride him to see how they go with him. So I will try all that next. But he also has to try.

Bucker Update - Sunday Success!
Posted by rosalita208 Then a friend of mine, an expert rider, took the horse in the arena. Asked for a trot, kicked out a little, when urged on he trotted fine. Horse was lightly reprimanded every time he threw a leg going into the trot or while trotting. Shake of the reins, leg pressure, nothing harsh. I was watching and the horse did not seem in pain. His demeanor and expression said "not my favorite thing to do, do I have to." When the answer was yes, he complied, somewhat begrudingly. Went up to the canter, cantering in a group with other horses. Kicked out a little first time asked, then did nicely, going with the group.

Posted by rosalita208 I feel like at least now we have a way to meet this guy, where he is coming from. He's uncomfortable in the arena, doesn't like it, for whatever reason. Maybe arena patterns are awkward to him physically because it's more turns and bending in circles, or maybe mentally he just doesn't see the point of it. Or who knows maybe he had a bad experience doing arena work at some point in his unknown past history. My mustang used to hate the arena work, because he found it boring and what is the point? Now he likes it, because he gets to go "play games" with his buddies. So it took him awhile to see it that way. In the arena I try to let him go in a group, and then pull him away from the group from time to time so he is also following the rider, with or without the others. Joining back up with the others is his reward. So with this guy the trail will be the reward and he'll have to develop more acceptance of the other over time. One of the reasons I do this exercise riding is to get to know more horses and learn more by experience. So it's not that the people at the ranch are forcing me to do it or would set me up to ride a horse that they think would hurt me. I volunteer and they know I want to learn. This one has been a good challenge for me. They would not let me ride a horse beyond what I could handle. If it started going that way, believe me, they'd take me off the horse and put it to a person with more skills. There are horses in training there that I do not ride for that reason. They need a higher level rider. This horse has been out of my comfort zone, but that's how you learn. I've gone over the ideas for making progress on this guy with the owners throughout the process, as they are mentors also. And I think that's the only way to really learn with horses, with coaching and help from people, then having the experience. What's great about this message board is you can get lots of different perspectives.
