Just go ask the barn manager about the service provided - and who is doing it. You are paying for a specific service - you shouldn't have to "worry" about asking for confirmation that you are getting exactly what you are paying for. Does the barn manager's insurance cover the other boarders? Ask for proof (the other boarders would, most likely, need to be identified as EMPLOYEES of the BO in order to be covered by insurance). If not, tell the BO that you do not want anyone who is not covered by insurance to handle your horse. On a related note, is the boarder just walking the horse from stall to paddock, or are they supervising "exercise" turn out (making the horse run in an arena, etc). That would also impact the "liability" being put on the boarder...

Whoa! That is extremely unprofessional & a HUGE liability for ALL involved. If the boarding facility owner does not have adequate staff to provide such a service then she shouldn't offer it. Many barns do not even allow your friend to turn your horse out without your presence EVEN if you said it is ok for liability reasons. If I am not mistaken Pine Creek is now Leap of Faith due to a lawsuit (not related to this subject/previous owners lost their business as a result)... I hear about equine lawsuits CONSTANTLY. If you have a trusted barn buddy you can get to do turnout & only this person I would take the matter out of her hands if she cannot provide staff to handle it. bummer, best of luck

I'm not sure I would trust whatever the BO says if she didn't already let you know that other people have been handling your horse. Definitely ask her about it and, depending on your gut feel, be prepared to stop the service or accept her response. Is there anyone at the barn you trust that you could then "hire" to do turnout? Our BO has had to move my horses if working on the stall, got out by mistake, etc, but then tells me and I'm grateful cuz I want to know. I don't want anyone handling my horses without my knowledge or prior OK and for good reason. Maybe that's over protective, but I dont care! Pleasant Hill, CA

I would like to know what the liability would be if you had contracted for the Barn Owner to do the turn out, but they passed it on to a non-employee to do it and they got hurt. I would be upset and disappointed if I had an agreement and it was being "outsourced" so to speak. Go for Longs Walks. Indulge in Hot Baths. Question your assumptions. Be kind to yourself. but you are paying the barn manager -- NOT other boarders -- to turn your horse out. I'd be concerned about liability if your horse either gets hurt or hurts whomever is turning it out. If the manager is asking others to do his/her job, the owners ought to be made aware because it also puts them in a liability risk situation. Additionally, it appears the manager is getting paid for not doing her job. No, I am not smarter than a 5th grader, but occasionally I am smarter than a 1st grader.
