fly masks

Does a fly mask exist that can't be ripped off within 5 minutes?

My favorite has always been the Kensington. Most of the rest of them can be ripped off in five minutes, with by tearing at the top or breaking the bottom velcro section.

Me too. Those are the only ones I buy and my mare is tough on her clothes. It has to be on snug though or she can rub it off. Every so often I was noticing this spring her fly mask would be partially off just the left ear. I finally put two and two together and figured out the days the barn worker put it on it would slip. The days I put it on it would not. He was putting it on way too loose. I let him know and I no longer find her pretending to look like a gangster with her one ear hanging out.

They are a nice fitting mask, but when I put them on horses who play with each other they are the first to come off, no doubt because they are slightly stretchy.

I bought brand new ones this month and the horses tore them off and ripped them within the first 24 hours. Grrr That was a wasted $40 on new masks, so now they can do without.

I have the pink-eared mask, and in addition to staying on, it looks like bunny ears to me, which I love. Admittedly, my girl is easy about stuff and I don't think she's ever tried to rub it off.

every day. She'd take a nap, rub her head on the ground - no more Cashel fly mask.
So, I sewed a velcro throat latch onto the thing, and it stayed on pretty well after that. She would sometimes get one ear loose, but it mostly stayed put with her rubbing. I used a stretchy material to anchor the velcro, but made sure it was comfortably snug under her throat.
My gelding shredded his in two days. There was nothing left of it. Went back to using the Supermask II on him, and that seems to work OK.

Mine like to roll and I've found the Supermask II works pretty well. I still need to keep spares, though. Nothing is 100% esp if they are out in a pasture, helping each other take the masks off, or whatever they do to get them off.

They all wear every imaginable fly mask made (owners supply their own fly masks for their horses) the only ones that stay on are the Kensingtons. The velcro fasteners can not be pulled open/off by their playful pals and they don't slip off over their heads. The Cashel's don't hold up well if your horses like to play "grab face."

For those that wear other fly masks, I am crusing the pastures daily looking for the ones that came off, and this time of year, with the grass as high as your knees, it's a lot of work!

They said that's the only one their mule hasn't been able to rip off his pasture mate. I bought one, but haven't had a chance to rip it out.

Last summer I had the joy of combing my gelding's pasture for a Cashel Crusader, a Weaver, and a Supermask. Two young geldings = hours of grabby face. But I have to say the Supermask seemed to stay on the longest.
