How many of you give your horses selenium supplements? How do I know if I need one? Should I just assume I need to give them something since I live in the NW? I only have 2 horses. They are used for rugged trails and light ranch work. They are on turnout 24/7, which has pasture grass about 6 months out of the year or less. We give them grass hay that is from either Burney/Fall River Mills area or Redding or sometimes up by Fort Jones/Etna. I feed beet pulp for sand. Other that that, they get herbs for supplement and salt/mineral blocks. So any thoughts?

I give a selenium supplement, but I had my horse's blood level selenium tested first, and the dosage was per the vet's advice after seeing the results of the blood test. I used Platinum Performance Antioxidant Formula which has selenium yeast. Too much selenium can be toxic--we grew hay commercially up in Modoc county and sometimes our hay would test high in selenium due to water issues.

I give mine selenium. Our hay always tests low. I use Su-Per selenium-vitamin E combo, at 1.5 mg of selenium per day.
