Ah, I had checked for the sequence on Sloane's, but I must have made a typo or something.
What made me feel that the sequence would be interesting would be the following line of analysis: first, observe that the series increases slowly and then jumps; second, look at the relative size of each jump; third, start noticing powers of 16.
