I tried to answer your question mate.
I agree that the triangles cannot be accessed from the start, (19 is accessible from 13 and 11 from 9).
I believe you may have chosen the best method for solving a large example by eliminating those triangles that cannot be reached from the start first, but also you might find that trial on error is the quickest and easiest method for such a small example and would eliminate the tedious 'frustrating time' that you referred to earlier.
