The K-Mart discount store in Albion, Michigan will be the first in the nation to close permanently. The store closes for good this Sunday, May 19, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. BlueLight shoppers who took advantage of 70% and 80% final day discounts will now have to go outside of Albion for their shopping fix. K-Mart was the only store of its size in Albion. According to the KMART Store Locator, the K-Marts nearest Albion are one store in Marshall, two in Jackson, and two in Battle Creek, one of which the 5500 Beckley Road store will also close soon. The Albion K-Mart has already been removed from their store locator. This store closing affects more than the 60 Albion K-Mart employees who are out of a job and Albion shoppers. The City of Albion stands to lose money because the city levies an income tax on its residents. The city is also smarting from the February 5th closing of Trillium Hospital, where about 190 people lost their jobs. As far as Benton Harbor area K-Marts, the KMART Store Locator lists all three stores nearest Benton Harbor as . The three stores are in Benton Harbor, Niles, and South Bend, Indiana.
