Sorry this is late but here's my idea: Tracey's post about a new movie got me thinking. Forget about another movie, that ship has sailed. Besides, you could never find an actress to replace EM. That's probably one of the reasons why the script was written the way it was in the last movie version.
If I had my way there would be a new TV show. I know many fans would like to leave the original Bewitched intact without tarnishing it with a poorly made remake, but my version of a new Bewitched series wouldn't be a remake, it would be a continuation of the original.
It would be a brother-sister comedy starring Erin Murphy as Tabitha and David Mandel as Adam. Tabitha and Adam would move back into their old house together on 1164 Morning Glory Circle. They would both have magical powers.
Tabitha would be the more sensible one like her mother, reserving her powers for only when necessary. Adam would be the wild one, more like an updated version of Serena or Uncle Arthur. He could be a struggling musician or something of the sort with a bevy of girlfriends he seduces with his magic and charm. Tabitha on the other hand, would be a recent divorcee with a couple of children. Her ex husband would show up on occasion to reek havoc and to make sure Tabitha isn't raising his children to grow up to be witches.
Samantha, Darrin and Endora could be seen in flashbacks of the original show, further tying the new show to the original and forever ending the question of who will play the new Samantha.
I really love the idea of using flashbacks. That really is an awesome idea. Your synopsis is very good as well. That way Samantha would still be played by Liz.
The ex-husband showing up to make sure Tabitha is not raising their children to be witches would be a riot.
Reminds me somewhat of the pilot for "Tabitha," in that both Adam and Tabitha were as you described. The only thing I wonder is, where are Darrin and Samantha, if Tabitha is living in 1164..."Witches are good! Witches are dear!"
I see this new show completely different and totally outside of the Tabitha pilot or series. Both Tabitha and Adam are now in their 40s, with either one or both of them having children and ex- spouses. While the original Bewitched could be considered a romantic comedy, this version would be a comedy about 2 adult siblings coming together after broken relationships and the loss of their parents.
Samantha and Endora are a now part of the spiritual world. Their absence could be explained in many ways. Although witches don’t die, they do pass on to other worlds or other planes of existence. “We are quicksilver, a fleeting shadow, a distant sound... our home has no boundaries beyond which cannot pass. We live in music, in a flash of color... we live on the wind and in the sparkle of a star!” Darrin is also now a part of that spiritual world with his beloved Samantha. Although Sam, Darrin and Endora would not be seen in the current time, their presence would be felt in many ways.
The new show would be intertwined with the original. The house at 1164 is now enchanted. Many of us adults who have lost our parents experience a sense of them being with us. They guide us spiritually from beyond. The new show would have that same feeling. A family heirloom, a picture on the wall, a treasured piece of jewelry or any item or scene from the current house could be used as point of reference to the original show.
Tabitha is in the front yard. She’s very upset about her current dilemma, for whatever reason in that particular episode. She begins to weep. The wind blows through the leaves of the old willow tree. The show flashes back to the episode of the weeping willow tree where Samantha weeps and weeps and weeps. It then flashes back to the current time. Tabitha smiles.
Adam is having an argument with his boss. His boss says to him “Adam are you insane?” The show flashes back to one of the many confrontations Darrin had with Larry where Larry says “Darrin are you insane?” It then flashes back to the current time. The flashback gives Adam the courage to move on.
Tabitha is in the kitchen preparing a meal. She drops a dish. She looks around to make sure no one is watching her and then magically puts the dish back together. The show flashes back to the many times Samantha did the very same thing, then flashes back to the current time.
LOL! I could go on and on but that’s pretty much how I see it.
