Posted by Tom Meg’s first gig as a DJ was at a little radio station in Briarcliff Manor, NY. Coincidentally, it was that same radio station that was the first to play my music on the air. Although, we never actually met Meg and I used to hang out at CBGB’s, Max’s Kansas City, and the Peppermint Lounge around the same time. I was introduced to Meg for the first time as I was hanging out with my friend and radio personality, Stephen “Coyote” Capen, when he worked at K-Rock in NYC. A few years later I re-met Meg at a coffee house called the Common Sense Café in Port Chester, NY where we both hung out and sang. Meg was working at WFUV - FM at the time. She had the Bossa Nova Beatniks up to the studios to perform on the air. Below is a photo from that day. It was soon after airing the Beatniks that Meg was offered her own station on Sirius Satellite Radio to do whatever she wanted. Hmmmm? Coincidence? Left to her own devices, Meg created the antidote to boring terrestrial radio that has had our culture in a stranglehold for all of this new century. I have been telling everybody I can about how wonderful Sirius DisOrder 24 is. Just check out this message board to see many of the fantastic playlists heard on Meg’s Sirius DisOrder. In January of 2005, we released our Moonlit Bossa CD and Meg added it to the rotation on Sirius DisOrder 24 and last week, more than a year later, I heard us aired twice. Now, after a solid a year of playing the Bossa Nova Beatniks on her station, Meg is being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Another Coincidence? Well, I joke about us being the good luck catalysts for the two biggest successes of Meg’s recent years, but actually it is the fact that Meg doesn’t need Billboard or Rolling Stone to tell her what is good and what to play. Her instincts are impeccable, her ears are golden and her heart has a back beat. She is a true leader in the broadcast medium and definitely deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Meg Griffin.
