I found out about your website recently. As my family has been involved in the Ariz. grocery biz in the past, I can give you more info on the El Rancho chain. El Rancho was the AZ operations of Mayfair of Calif...they began in the late 50s with a handfull of stores and ended up as a sizable statewide operation. They also started a discount grocery chain called Low Cost in the Phoenix area (they were a supposed competitor to Lucky - El Rancho was your basic weekly specials/Green Stamps operation) and ran the Food Giant chain in Tucson. When Mayfair "downsized" in the mid 80s, they pieced off the El Rancho operation to various independent operators - most of which are long gone.
