In Seattle I can name a few places where there were dueling Krogers. First one is on Seattle's Captiol Hill. Actually these particular stores were not dueling. I am refering to the QFC and Fred Meyer that were across the street from each other. However, the Fred Meyer in this case was in a enclosed mini-mall and was extremely small for a Fred Meyer. It had no grocery section and no clothing. It was mostly a drug and variety store with a home electronics section. The QFC that was across the street from this Freddy's has taken over the Fred Meyer. So now this is a QFC that has furniture and hardware and lots of general merchandise. In Shoreline, WA, just north of Seattle, there was another duel between Freddy's and QFC. On the west side of Aurora Ave was Fred Meyer and QFC in Gateway Center was just across the street. Interestingly enough, Gateway Center originally had a QFC and Marketime Drug (Freddy's first entry into Seattle). Later the Marketime space became a store called, Fred Meyer-Marketime Catalog Showroom. This was a short lived experiment. Then Freddy's turned this into a store called Music Market. Music Market eventually became the instore record dept at Fred Meyer. I know I am digressing. Eventually Music Market was closed at Gateway. Now after quite a few years of the same ownership, the QFC is now closed. In this case, Freddy's won. In Issaquah, WA there was the existing QFC in the Meadows Shopping Center on Gilman Blvd. About 3/4 mile down the street, the Issaquah Commons was being built. Originally the grocer that was going to go in there was Snohomish County based Olson's Foods. Olsen's was acquired by QFC before Fred Meyer and Kroger entered the picture. So QFC was going to take over the site intended for Olson's. Just days before the opening of QFC at Issaquah Commons, the owners of the Meadows Shopping Center sued QFC for opening a competeing store too close to it's existing store at the Meadows. So the Issaquah Commons QFC never opened as a QFC. It was later sold to a independent grocer and became Issaquah Market. But it kept the QFC graphics. Eventually this store was sold to Safeway and is still a Safeway.
