Re: Kroger and Albertsons might merge

I will be interesting in Utah to see what happens, where Smith's and Labertson's are the two dominate grocers. I know in places like Ogden and Saly Lake City there Is usually a Smith's and then at least 1/2 to 1/4 of mile there is an Albertson's it seems like the Smith's stores are larger and nicer, and the Smith's Marketplaces (former Fred Meyer) offer no comparison. I know that the Smith name and Smith family is rather prominent in Utah, the company started in Brigham City. With that same recognition I would doubt that the Utah Smith's stores would be rebranded as Albertson's, although I could see the Albertson's name coming down in Utah --Previous Message-- : I don't think there is any chance at all : that Kroger and Albertsons could merge : operations in Idaho, but it is worth : noting that Idaho Falls, : Pocatello/Chubbuck, and Twin Falls all : have Albertsons, Smith's, and Fred : Meyer stores. If the merger did happen, : you would have one company with three : banners, at least initially. It's hard : to imagine the Albertsons name coming : down in Eastern Idaho, but Smith's : seems to have a lot of brand equity in : the area also, given its history here. : : Then again, they could close the : Smith's stores. The one in Idaho Falls : is next to a WinCo, the one in Chubbuck : is down the road from a Wal-Mart : Supercenter, and the one in Twin Falls : is near an Albertsons that I heard is : being or has been rebuilt. : : --Previous Message-- : There are a few Smiths left in AZ, : which : I don't quite understand. Mostly near : the border of the state (Bullhead City, : Lake Havasu City, and one other spot : that escapes memory). : : It is interesting that Las Vegas Smiths : is supplied partially by the Ralphs : SoCal Distribution Center (and : partially by Frys). The Reno Smiths are : still supplied from Utah, even though : Ralphs has a distribution center in : Stockton for NorCal. Utah is a long : drive from Reno. : : With those things being said, I agree : with other posters that this supposed : merger is a lousy idea. : : --Previous Message-- : It is a wonder why Kroger already : hasn't : combined some of its store brands. : Example is Fry's in AZ/Smith's in : NM...both supplied from the Phoenix : dist. center. And King Soopers/City : Market/Smith's in the Rockies. And also : Smith's in Nev combined with Ralphs : (they already run Food4Less in Vegas) : : --Previous Message-- : I just don't see it happening: too many : anti-trust issues would result in : divestures all over the country. I : agree with those who state that KR may : be interested in parts rather than the : whole. Kroger is already a perilously : unwieldly company in it has too many : different banners and is simply : involved in too many different types of : retail operations. Remember in the 80's : when Sears tried to diversify its : operations to be all things to all : people? It didn't work. I see this : potential merger as potential disaster. : : --Previous Message-- : I know that this board is about : history, : but I am wondering in areas like : Seattle, where Kroger operates the Fred : Meyer and QFC banners, what would : happen here? I can see Boise having : both the Albertsons and Fred Meyer : banners. But I can't see Fred Meyer, : Albertsons and QFC all surviving in the : Seattle Market. But I could see some : becoming Fred Meyer Marketplaces, some : QFC and maybe Kroger would introduce : Food 4 Less here. Anyway, please : forgive me for getting off the normal : history/architecture subject matter of : this board. : : : : : : : : : :
