ALPHA BETA SUPERMARKETS
Posted by Wayne Winterland Jr. on 11/4/2005, 12:09 am 205.188.116.204
My father began working for Alpha Beta Markets in 1947 and while going through some of his things i found a complete copy of 2 sections of the local newspaper in Orange, California. He opened a new store there on May 25, 1949 where he eventaully became the store manager at that store. in this store there was of course an over the counter meat market, dairy, frozen foor dept., and grocery dept. but there were no refrigerated cases for the produce. The produce was just displayed on gondolas with someone throughout the day using a big watering can to keep the produce as fresh as they could in those days and occasionally they also used a little bit of ice. i still have the complete 2 section newspaper about the grand opening and tonight i went to Kinkos and had 2 copies made there. one has a picture of each of the 21 stores that they operated at that time and you can see in some of the small print the variations of the Alpha Beta names on these stores. The other page is a copy of some of their items that were on sale in their grand opening ad. i would like to send this to you if you would like to have these picture copies. i will mail them to you if you would send me your mailing address. i'm hoping that maybe the pictures of the 21 store buildings will be a nice addition to some of the things that you have on your web site. If you would like me to sent these copied pictures just let me know where to send them.yours truly, Wayne Winterland Jr. wwwjr1946@aol.com
