Posted by Bill Burroughs Just a note that I have been updating info on the Burroughs family, including the Princess Anne info. I am just about certain that my family descends from Elzy Burroughs' brother, William K. Burroughs. Both men were lighthouse keepers on the Chesapeake (William kept the light at Smith Point at the Potomac, a light that Elzy built, then rebuilt after erosion in 1807). Have you had any more luck tying your line back further? You had asked about a James Burroughs and his son, Charles Evans Burroughs. I have not tied into a James, but I have filled out Elzy's family and the family of John Henry Burroughs, both of whom moved to the Norfolk/Portsmouth/Princess Anne County areas in the 1810 to 1830 period, I believe. I think they were brothers, and their father was John Burroughs, A Revolutionary War Vet who owned land in the New Point area of Mathews County (then Kingston Parish of Gloucester County) around 1810, but who probably emigrated to Mathews County from Stafford County, Virginia. His people MAY have come to Stafford from Massachusetts (still no solid proof of this). The challenge is determining your James' parents' names, particularly his father since you are trying to trace the Burroughs line. If you can do that, you may be able to tie into my work. If you determine a father for James Burroughs, and if you have genealogy software that can import a GEDCOM file, I highly recommend that you download the GEDCOM available from my genealogy page. Find Elzy and work your way down the tree to where your ancestor should be. I wish you the best of luck!
