Posted by Traci It is important to me because last year I was at a women's conference where we had a private prayer meeting in a hotel room. There were probably 20 of us praying for this one woman to be BHS. She didn't speak in tongues - that seemed to be our only qualm. I personally believe that she is spirit-filled and just doesn't - for one reason or the other. She has been going to New Heart for a while and has been a Christian for years. So we just kept on praying for her, trying to help her in any old way to get her to speak in tongues. I think most of us - truly in our hearts - think she is, but she has a mental block with it - and so did almost everyone in the room - except me. I couldn't pray for her anymore! I just got up and said, "Listen (I'll call her Jane), just start saying, "la, la, la, lo, lo, lo,. . " Eventually, you'll get other words and over time you'll have a whole language. That's how it happened to me." That is the short version. Everyone was shocked at the primitive approach. I was telling the truth, however! I was trying to expose how primitive I thought we were all being with her. It really happened to me this way when I was 13. I was at CCBTC. No bells, no whistles, no supernatural experience. For all practical purposes, I taught myself to speak in tongues. But I don't really care. I don't really care how many people around the world (of the 100s of thousands that speak in tongues), have taught themselves. They all "speak in tongues." They don't understand what they are saying. They are making a decision to yield their tongue to something besides their own will and mind. I believe I am spirit filled and I believe I speak in tongues. But there is nothing that makes me think that I wasn't filled with the Holy Spirit before this - other than the bible says that it is evidence. I think there are also other evidences. Traci
