Posted by Theophilus In my case, I believe I was filled with the Holy Spirit the night I was baptized in water, without speaking in tongues... and that I spoke in tongues a month or so later because God gave me the gift in response to my seeking and praying for it. In the case of my sister, she was saved in a little Evangelical Church where the pastor was still seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Soon after her salvation experience wonderful things began happening to her in prayer, including words of knowledge visions and prophecy. One day a year are so later, she was praying with a group of ladies from several Churches but when it came her turn to pray she could not say anything... she stopped herself every time because the only words that came to her mind made no sense. One of the ladies there told her to let go and pray and see what God would do... and she spoke forth in tongues. I know lots of people who believe that tongues is one of the gifts and is often manifested when the Holy Spirit comes upon people... but is not the only sign or evidence. This is where my experience has led me to believe... I do not agree with DB, the UPC or other old-line Pentecostals who adopted the Wesleyan teaching about the second work of grace, i.e. the Spirit Baptism, and said that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence. However, I agree with Moses who said... “Oh, that all the LORD's people were prophets and that the LORD would put His Spirit upon them!" ~ Sid

I believe that God gives us the fullness of His Spirit and His gifts according to His will. All we need do is believe, trust God and continue asking for spiritual gifts... especially for the edification of the Church and the advancement of the kingdom of God.
